This folder contains the papers that are presented at this year’s MacHack. The papers were written by their authors earlier this spring; each author has an exclusive one-hour session to present the paper, and, more importantly, answer questions and stimulate a discussion on the paper’s topic.
Both the quantity and the quality of this year’s papers was much better than anticipated. Nine papers were selected out of a total of twelve abstracts submitted. The abstracts were chosen on the basis of quality, creativity, relevance to the Macintosh community, and potential interest to MacHack attendees.
Two of the papers cover compilers, one from a theoretical point of view, and one from a practical perspective. Two of the papers are on various roles of object-oriented programming, one covering the logistics of using object-oriented programming to develop non-applications, the other proposing an approach to develop truly extensible applications (see also Shane Looker’s paper in the MacHack ’90 proceedings). A paper addresses the problems of developing applications for multiple platforms and yields a solution with important side benefits, while another presents an intriguing method of structuring cluttered directories on large disks. A paper reviews under controlled conditions the methods for developing educational software, and, finally, papers introduce the Data Access Language (DAL) and provide tips for testing Macintosh applications.
Although this is the sixth annual MacHack conference, the papers track was only introduced two years ago. It has been growing ever since, and it’s not too early to start making plans for next year. If you have an idea and are interested in writing and presenting a paper at MacHack ’92, please contact Aimée at the conference management (Expotech). We encourage submissions from both the academic and the commercial communities.
In closing, I’d like to thank the people who volunteered and invested their valuable time that made this year’s paper track possible—thank you Aimée, Carol, Brita, and Jordan for organizing the greatest MacHack yet and producing this book; Doug for scheduling sessions and making the MacHack CD; all of the other volunteers and committee members for making this conference possible; and, most of all, the authors themselves for taking their time to write the papers and having the courage to do presentations in front of an opinionated gathering of Macintosh experts.
